A Freeport High School senior and football player who was diagnosed with cancer last year, received a surprise visit last week from a Pittsburgh Steeler.
Garrett King was unable to play last fall after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. But he made a request through the Make-a-Wish Foundation to help out his current team.
“I didn’t really feel like I needed or wanted anything for myself, and I knew I had this amazing opportunity to really do whatever I wanted. And I thought what was the most important thing to me at this time was the Freeport community and everyone that helped my family and did so much for my family. I figured something like new uniforms for my team could be something that was fantastic for everyone in the community.”
The new uniforms arrived last week, and during the unveiling ceremony King received a surprise visit from Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.
“He’s obviously been basically a superhero to me since I was a little kid. With me playing quarterback, and him being the hometown quarterback—to see someone like him walk out, look at me, and talk to me, it was just a surreal experience.”
