The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in overtime last night at PPG Paints Arena. Brandon Tanev scored the game-winner short handed in the extra period. It was his first goal of the season and first as a Penguin. Sidney Crosby scored his fourth goal of the season. He now has a point in every Penguins game this season and has 12 points in seven games. Jake Guentzel netted his fifth goal of the year. The victory was the Penguins fourth in a row, and was the first loss of the season for Colorado.
Due to the number of injuries to their forwards, the Penguins used defenseman Juuso Riikola as a left winger last night. Jared McCann missed the game with a lower-body injury.
The Pens host Minnesota tomorrow night and Vegas Saturday. They remain tied for second place in the Metropolitan Division with Washington. Both the Capitals and first-place Carolina won last night.
