Two local Pennsylvania Department of Transportation employees are helping girls learn more about careers available in fields connected to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
District Geotechnical Engineer Alicia Kavulic and Community Relations Coordinator and Jamie Arehart coordinated a visit to Camp Redwing in Renfrew last week to speak with Girl Scouts about engineering.
The visit was part of the Girl Scouts’ Think Like an Engineer Journey and included information about civil engineering careers as well as hands on activities involving different construction materials PennDOT uses to build and maintain roads and bridges.
The purpose of this Girl Scouts activity and the involvement of PennDOT employees is to encourage learning, problem solving, and critical thinking as well as educate and mentor young women about future careers in government and transportation.
