It’s still unclear why a Butler man allegedly set a house on fire Saturday in the city of Butler.
Victor Weltner, 24, remains in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail while awaiting a preliminary hearing on arson and burglary charges.
Weltner allegedly told police he was walking past the home on Broad Street early Saturday morning when he had to use the bathroom. He said he entered the house by breaking a window in the rear door. It was unoccupied as the homeowner was in the process of fixing it up before moving in.
According to court documents, Weltner told police he was “screwing around with his lighter” when he caught the kitchen curtains on fire. He said the fire spread quickly and he fled.
No one was hurt in the fire but it took firefighters about an hour to put out the flames. One of the homes next-door also received some heat and smoke damage.
