The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is urging residents to be careful about utility account security when answering telemarketing sales calls from competitive energy suppliers.
Any consumer encountering an aggressive sales agent or suspecting a possible scam should contact the Bureau of Consumer Services as well as alert their local utility.
No matter what telemarketers say, residents are not required to choose a competitive supplier for electricity or natural gas supply. Also, only a utility can initiate termination of service and not a telemarketing sales agent.
All agents making telemarketing calls must immediately identify themselves and the supplier they are representing as well as the reason for the call. The Bureau of Consumer Services can be reached at 1-800-692-7380.
