A Butler County woman has been sentenced after pleading guilty to illegally obtaining and disclosing the health information of other people.
According to a Department of Justice press release, 62-year-old Linda Kalina of Butler was sentenced to one year of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release.
While employed in 2016 and 2017 by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and then Allegheny Health Network, Kalina wrongfully obtained health information relating to 111 individual patients in violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Kalina then wrongfully disclosed the personal health information of two such individuals, with the intent to cause embarrassment and mental distress.
Kalina may have no contact with any of the individuals she victimized during the terms of her imprisonment and supervised release.
