The Butler County Humane Society in Connoquenessing has reopened following a two-week closure to quarantine and disinfect after exposure to a dangerous- and many times lethal- canine virus.
Executive Director Jennifer DiCuccio said several dogs tested positive for the canine parvovirus.
“The animals that were affected by the virus are animals that come in stray or abandoned, but they’re all back now and everybody survived, thankfully,” she said Wednesday. “We were extremely proactive in catching it early because they were able to get to the vet and get treatment, which is extremely important.”
The virus attacks the dog’s intestinal system and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and lack of appetite.
DiCuccio said the local community did step up and help the shelter in a big way during their closure.
“The community support has been overwhelming,” she said. “The biggest need right now is financial.”
The shelter is currently at maximum capacity because the shelter was unable to process adoptions while they’ve been closed.
The shelter has new hours through June 1:
Monday & Tuesday- Closed
Wednesday-Friday- 11am-5pm
Satuurday-Sunday- 10am to 5pm
