The Pittsburgh Pirates ended their preseason with a 5-1 victory over the Houston Astros Tuesday. Melky Cabrera and Kevin Newman hit two-run home runs for the Bucs. The Pirates finished their exhibition season 15-15-3 overall.
The Bucs made the majority of their roster moves, with the status of two injured players yet to determine the final roster heading into their season opener in Cincinnati tomorrow. The Pirates have taken 27 players to Cincinnati. Pitchers Nick Kingham and Nick Burdi have made the final roster. Utility player Pablo Reyes has made the club. Left-hander Steven Brault may be sent to the minors prior to tomorrow’s game. Five other players were reassigned yesterday.
Outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall was hit in the right hand by a pitch Monday. He was to be the starting right fielder. If he is unable to start the season, J.B. Shuck will make the team. Melky Cabrera would take over in right field.
Gregory Polanco, who is recovering from two significant injuries, played five innings in a minor league game Sunday and played another inning yesterday in Florida. He could return in April.
Catcher Elias Diaz will continue his spring training in Florida after being struck by a virus a month ago.
