A Butler County woman has pleaded guilty to charges of illegally obtaining and disclosing the health information of other people.
According to a Department of Justice press release, 61-year-old Linda Kalina of Butler entered her plea on one count of wrongfully obtaining and disclosing the health information of another individual.
According to the plea, Kalina- while employed in 2016 and 2017 by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and then Tri Rivers Musculoskeletal Centers in Mars- wrongfully obtained health information in violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), relating to 111 individual patients.
Kalina then wrongfully disclosed the personal gynecological health information of two such individuals, with the intent to cause embarrassment and mental distress.
Kalina could face 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both when she is sentenced June 25th.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation leading to prosecution in this case.
