The Slippery Rock University football team soared from out of the top 25 in the national poll to a final ranking of Number 12 when the American Football Coaches Association announced its final 2018 Division II national rankings Monday.
The Rock received votes in the national poll for the final six weeks of the season, but never cracked the top 25 during the year. SRU jumped into the top half of the final national poll after making a deep playoff run to the NCAA quarterfinals as one of the final eight teams in the playoffs.
Slippery Rock finished the season with an 11-3 overall record, marking the third most wins in a single-season in program history. The Rock swept through the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with a 7-0 record and reached the NCAA quarterfinals for the second time in the last four years.
Slippery Rock is the top ranked team from the PSAC in the final poll and the second ranked team from Super Region One,
Former Slippery Rock University offensive coordinator Phil Longo has been hired for the same position at North Carolina. The Tar Heels recently hired Mack Brown as head coach.
Former IUP head football coach Curt Cignetti has been hired as the new head coach at James Madison. Cignetti led Elon the past two seasons. Prior to that, he spent six seasons at IUP. Mike Houston recently left James Madison to take the head coaching position at East Carolina.
