The Slippery Rock University football team defeated LIU-Post 20-14 Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. It was the first playoff road victory in program history. Quarterback Roland Rivers III threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Wynn, Jr on the first play of the game. Running back Wes Hills rushed for 167 yards and a score.
The Rock entered the game as the #7-seed in Super Region One, and upset the Pioneers who entered as the #2-seed and were undefeated.
The Rock will now face #6 seed New Haven this Saturday in Connecticut, after the Chargers upset #3 seed West Chester 35-28 Saturday. Kick-off this week is noon. Hear the game on The Rock Station 97.7fm beginning at 11:30am.
Other Football notes:
Pitt defeated Wake Forest 34-13 Saturday and clinched the ACC Coastal Division. The Panthers visit Miami Saturday to wrap up the regular season, and will face Clemson in the ACC title game. Pitt is now ranked #24 this week in the Associated Press Top 25 poll. It is the first time since 2016 the Panthers have cracked into the nation’s Top-25.
Penn State is now ranked #15 after defeating Rutgers 20-7. West Virginia fell to #12 after losing to Oklahoma State 45-41.
High School Football:
Pine-Richland defeated Seneca Valley to win the WPIAL 6A championship Saturday night at Heinz Field. It was their third title in the past five years. The Rams will meet State College in the PIAA first round this week.
South Fayette, Aliquippa and Our Lady of Sacred Heart were the other WPIAL championship winners at Heinz Field.
Two other WPIAL championship games will played this weekend. Penn Hills and West Allegheny will meet in the 5A championship Friday at Norwin high school. South Side Beaver and Steel Valley play for the 2A championship Saturday at Robert Morris University.
Grove City was upset by Sharon in the District-10 championship Saturday 23-6.
Last week’s storm forced some playoff football cancellations. In District-9 – Smethport and Coudersport will meet in the PIAA 1A first round today at 4pm at Karns City high school.
