Thousands of people attended a vigil Sunday night in Pittsburgh to remember the victims of Saturday’s mass shooting at a synagogue in Squirrel Hill.
At least 2,000 mourners packed Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland- and thousands more stood outside. All remembered the eleven victims who were killed.
Stephanie Weichler was born and raised in Squirrel Hill. She’s catholic and attended the vigil. Weichler knew the 97-year old victim – Rose Mallinger- through the office where she works. She always called her Miss Rose.
“She always had a smile on her face and never had a bad thing to say about anyone,” Weichler said. “This tragedy has rocked the entire community.”
Judy O’Connor is Jewish and has lived in Squirrel Hill her whole life. She doesn’t belong to the Tree of Life synagogue but she says she knows the place very well and has been there many times for weddings and bar mitzvahs.
“It feels like you’re in the twilight zone. You feel so helpless. And, I’m getting angry. I’m angry that this happened,” O’Connor said.
Tiffany Salaberrios is from the Bronx- she, her husband Dimas, and their two daughters (Skylar and Dallas, aged 7 and 11) drove six hours to get to Pittsburgh on Saturday night. Dimas is a pastor and they often go to places in crisis, especially if it is faith related.
They spent a long time in Charleston after the shooting there. Tiffany describes their family as being non-denominational Christians.
Remembrances and funerals for the 11 victims will continue for weeks.
