The St. Barnabas Health System is investing in new technology to give residents longer, healthier and more enjoyable lives.
A company called Mynd VR has spent the last two years researching and developing virtual reality technology targeted for seniors.
The technology surrounds ‘immersion distraction’ and is something you put over your eyes.
“In other words, if you’re totally focused on something else- a hike through Yellowstone Park; swimming with dolphins or taking off an aircraft carrier- you’re not going to be thinking about your pain and anxiety and depression. I applaud St. Barnabas for being the initiator of this and we’re very anxious to see where it goes,” Neurosurgeon Dr. Joe Maroon said during an unveiling of the technology on Friday.
Maroon said there are several benefits that virtual reality can provide to seniors and their brains that have been affected by aging conditions.
St. Baranbas is starting with a slow roll-out of the technology with five virtual reality devices being used by a select group of volunteers for three, 15-minute sessions per week under doctor supervision. The heath system could adapt the technology in all of their assisted living facilities in the future.
Chris Brickler is the CEO and co-founder of Mynd VR.
“St. Barnabas is the absolute innovator in Pennsylvania. This is the only flagship organization that we know of that has implemented virtual reality for its senior residents and we’re thrilled to be a part of that program. This is a first for Pittsburgh; a first for Pennsylvania,” Brickler said.
The St. Barnabas Health System is based in Gibsonia. Their spectrum of care includes four retirement communities, five living assistance facilities, two skilled nursing homes, home care, hospice, and a community outpatient medical and dental center. The campuses are located in Butler, Allegheny and Beaver counties.
