The Pittsburgh Pirates swept the Kansas City Royals following a 2-1 victory last night at PNC Park. Starting pitcher Chris Archer allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight. Felipe Vazquez earned his 35th save of the season one day after blowing his first save since May. Adam Frazier had the game-winning hit with his ninth home run of the year in the Pirates fifth inning.
The Bucs have now won five in a row, and improved to 77-74 overall. They have 10 games remaining in the season and are six back in the Wild Card race, so they are not mathematically eliminated from the post-season just yet. They have today off, then host Milwaukee Friday for the final three games of the season at PNC Park.
Pitcher Chad Kuhl had elbow surgery yesterday. The 26-year old has not pitched since late June.
