The Pittsburgh Pirates winning streak was stopped at five games last night in a 8-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. Former Slippery Rock University first baseman Matt Adams hit a three-run home run off Pirates reliever Edgar Santana in the eighth inning erasing a Pirates 6-4 lead. It was Adams 21st home run of the season. Colin Moran, Josh Harrison and Starling Marte homered for the Pirates.
Their rare bullpen blown loss put the Pirates back under .500, while keeping the Cardinals 2-1/2 games in front of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the final National League Wild Card.
Pirates starting pitcher Trevor Williams retired the first nine batters he faced, but allowed four runs in the fourth inning. It was as many runs as he had allowed in his previous nine starts.
The Bucs and Cardinals play again tonight at 8:15pm. Joe Musgrove will start for the Pirates. WISR pre-game is 7:50.
Players, coaches and umpires will wear special hats with a 9/11 ribbon on the side for today’s games, as Major League Baseball commemorates the 2001 attacks. Royalties from the sales of the hats will go to the National September 11th Memorial and Museum, the Pentagon Memorial Fund and the Flight 93 National Memorial.
