The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 last night. Pirates starting pitcher Trevor Williams allowed just three hits over six innings, and struck out a career-high eight. The win improved Williams record to 11-9 overall. Over his last eight starts, Williams has allowed two runs or less. Felipe Vazquez earned his 28th save. Jordy Mercer returned to the lineup from the disabled list, and scored the game-winning run after he doubled to start the fifth inning.
The Bucs and Cardinals complete their three-game series tonight at 7:15pm. Joe Musgrove will start for the Pirates.
In orded to make room for Mercer’s return from the disabled list, the Pirates designated Sean Rodriguez for assignment. The 33-year old utility player was batting .167 this season.
The Altoona Curve lost to the Trenton Thunder 5-0 last night, for their third consecutive loss. Curve outfielder Bryan Reynolds singled in the seventh inning to break up a no-hitter. The Curve and Thunder complete their four-game series tonight. It is the final regular-season home game. Akron lost to Bowie, so the two teams remain tied atop the Eastern League Western Division with five games remaining.
